“I think I’m after resin, but will take advice.” That is genuinely the most common thing we hear, and it is the right way round. Resin, block and tarmac all suit different houses, different budgets and different drainage.

Two days excavating to the right level
Not scraping the top off and laying over what is there. The depth is what decides whether it takes a car without rutting.
Type 3 permeable sub-base
Permeable throughout, so surface water goes down through the drive rather than off it into the road.
Mesh across the whole surface
Reinforcement over the full area before any binder goes near it.
Binder course, then the 20mm wearing layer
Twenty millimetres because it is taking vehicles. Thinner is cheaper and it is the first thing to go.
Edging and brick piers
On this one we built two new piers in face brick matched to the extension we had just finished, so the front of the house reads as one job.
Laid on the Thursday, ready to drive on by the Saturday.
We compete on what is still standing in 30 years
On a four car garage in Ferring we dug foundations to 1.5 metres, as the building inspector required. Two thousand bricks and five hundred blocks, laid by hand, all level. Ten days from breaking ground to handing it over.
Nothing was cut to hit a price. No shallower foundations, no cheaper materials, no corners where you cannot see them. The homeowner paid for it once.
